February 4th marks the World Cancer Day.
World Cancer Day is a global initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment.
Unfortunately most of us seek knowledge and information on cancer, only when oneself or a loved one befalls to it. The article today is written with the purpose of not only creating awareness for cancer, but also to encourage consumption of all such food and supplements that may help prevent cancer. This information will support you to better take care of yourself and your loved ones.
What Is Cancer?
According to the National Cancer Institute, Cancer is a disease in which some of the body’s cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can start almost anywhere in the human body, which is made up of trillions of cells. You can visit cancer.gov for more information.
Why Talk About Food Along With Cancer?
Multiple researches, as well as, trial and error have made one thing clear to this generation; we are, what we eat. More and more studies now show that by consuming natural and unprocessed food will help make the body healthier and can contribute to the longevity of life.
Cancer is no doubt, one of the most dreaded diagnoses to hear from a Doctor. There’s no singular and definite reason or contributing factor that can cause cancer. However, that should not be a reason to not try to prevent it. Just like we work to improve our immunity, we can also focus on reducing the chance of cancer by consuming healthier foods and supplements.
According to the Cancer.net certain foods, vitamins and minerals may raise or lower cancer risk. However, we should be aware that no food or supplement could fight against cancer completely. Still, just like we eat healthy food for better physical health, consuming certain foods may help prevent cancer.
Foods For Cancer Prevention
No single food can prevent cancer, but the right combination of foods may help make a difference.
Let’s look at foods that may help prevent cancer:
Apples: The phrase “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” actually can be considered fairly true. Apples contain polyphenols that have promising anticancer properties.
Berries: Berries are rich in vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibers. Scientists have shown a lot of interest in berries due to their antioxidant properties and potential health benefits.
Cruciferous vegetables: Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and kale, contain beneficial nutrients, and sulforaphane; a plant compound with anticancer properties.
Carrots: Carrots have high amounts of beta-carotene, which plays a vital role in supporting the immune system and may prevent certain types of cancer. Studies show that beta-carotene helps reduction in the risk of breast and prostate cancer. Another analysis shows that higher consumption of carrots can lower risk of developing stomach cancer.
Fatty fish: Fish like salmon, mackerel, and anchovies, is rich in essential nutrients and can lower the risk of colorectal cancer and prostate cancer.
Walnuts: Walnuts contain a substance called pedunculagin, which the body metabolizes into urolithins. Urolithins are compounds that bind to estrogen receptors and may play a role in preventing breast cancer.
Legumes: Legumes, such as beans, peas, and lentils, are high in fiber, which may help lower a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer and breast cancer.
Work on including a mix of the above food in your diet, to help your body become stronger. Also, as all the above foods are rich in nutrients and fiber, they will also encourage you to fight obesity and improve energy.
Since we looked at food that can help prevent cancer, it is equally important to recognize foods that can cause cancer.
Foods That Cause Cancer
- Processed meats: Processed meat is any type of meat that’s been preserved by smoking, salting, curing, or canning. Most processed meats are red meats. Some examples of red meat that’s been processed include:
- Hot Dogs
- Corned beef
- Beef jerky
- White bread
The methods used to make processed meats can create carcinogens. A carcinogen is any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that promotes carcinogenesis, the formation of cancer.
Fried foods: Fried starchy foods are especially high in acrylamide. This includes fried potato products, like French fries and potato chips. According to a study, acrylamide was found to be carcinogenic in studies done on rats. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) considers it “probably carcinogenic to humans.”
Sugar and refined carbohydrates: Sugary foods and refined carbs can indirectly increase your risk for cancer. Some examples of these foods include:
- Baked goods
- White pasta
- White rice
- Sugary cereals
- Sugar-sweetened beverages
- White bread
Eating a high concentration of sugary, starchy foods may put you at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and obesity. According to a study, both conditions promote inflammation and oxidative stress. This may increase your risk for certain types of cancer.
To reduce the risk for cancer, limit the consumption of cancer causing foods, and focus on healthy lifestyle habits. This includes eating more foods that may lower your cancer risk. Also, focus on doing regular exercise, and practice ways to reduce your stress.
Supplements For Cancer Prevention
Although the foods listed as the one that may prevent cancer are everyday grocery items and readily available, some people may not want/or are unable to make significant dietary or lifestyle changes. In other cases, it is sometimes convenient for people to take a supplement, to ensure that all vital nutrients are being taken.
Vitamins A, C, and E are notable for their anticancer properties and are available as supplements individually, or in a measured and balanced form of a multivitamin.
Greeniche offers a range of multivitamins, which are amazing to replenish your nutritional needs. Greeniche offers the following multivitamins:

For those who do not use Turmeric in cooking, they can rely on Greeniche’s Curcumin Gold Extracted From Turmeric.
As always, you must speak to a medical professional before starting a supplement regimen and its interaction with other medications you currently take.
Research into preventing cancer through diet and supplements is still in the early stages and requires further testing. However, it is vital to remember that eating a balanced diet high in fresh fruits, vegetables, and good fats will benefit overall health and boost your immunity and strength.
