World Cancer Day is a global initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. 

 

Unfortunately most of us seek knowledge and information on cancer, only when oneself or a loved one befalls to it. The article today is written with the purpose of not only creating awareness for cancer, but also to encourage consumption of all such food and supplements that may help prevent cancer. This information will support you to better take care of yourself and your loved ones.

Legumes: Legumes, such as beans, peas, and lentils, are high in fiber, which may help lower a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer and breast cancer.

  • Processed meats: Processed meat is any type of meat that’s been preserved by smoking, salting, curing, or canning. Most processed meats are red meats. Some examples of red meat that’s been processed include:

The methods used to make processed meats can create carcinogens. A carcinogen is any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that promotes carcinogenesis, the formation of cancer.

 

Fried foods: Fried starchy foods are especially high in acrylamide. This includes fried potato products, like French fries and potato chips. According to a study, acrylamide was found to be carcinogenic in studies done on rats. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) considers it “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

 

Sugar and refined carbohydrates: Sugary foods and refined carbs can indirectly increase your risk for cancer. Some examples of these foods include:

 

  • Baked goods
  • White pasta
  • White rice
  • Sugary cereals
  • Sugar-sweetened beverages
  • White bread

Eating a high concentration of sugary, starchy foods may put you at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and obesity. According to a study, both conditions promote inflammation and oxidative stress. This may increase your risk for certain types of cancer.

 

To reduce the risk for cancer, limit the consumption of cancer causing foods, and focus on healthy lifestyle habits. This includes eating more foods that may lower your cancer risk. Also, focus on doing regular exercise, and practice ways to reduce your stress.
