Detoxing has become one of the most searched concepts on health related practices.


With the progression of processed food dependency around the world, the idea of carrying out a detoxification of one’s body has become a popular concept. It is important to note that detoxing is not the same as dieting. While a diet offers an eating schedule, detoxification on the other hand focuses on ridding the body of toxins through a focused regime for a specific number of days. Another popular term for detoxification is ‘Cleanse’.


No matter what the term may be, the idea is to take a break from the usual eating patterns and actually focus on intake of such items that would allow our body to reset and dispose of of toxins.

How do I know if I need to Detoxify?

This can be determined by asking yourself:


  • Do you get tired easily?
  • Do you feel bloated and swollen most of the time?
  • Do you feel that you need to eat more to keep your energy up?
  • Are you always eating fast food?
  • Are your preferred snacks processed foods like chips and cookies?
  • Do you have trouble sleeping?
  • Do you easily get out of breath?
  • Do you have trouble with your bowel movements?
  • Do you have acne?

If you answer ‘Yes’ to even one of the above questions, then doing a Detox will help kick start your system and help you with many beneficial changes in your body.

Benefits of Detoxing

Let’s get started by looking at the many benefits of doing a Detox.


1. Improves Liver function.


Carrying out a Detox regime on a regular basis will give your liver the time to recover from overworking. Instead of processing foods that are hard to digest, a Detox will allow your liver to take a break from overworking and actually reset for improved functioning.


2. Reduces Body Inflammation


By taking natural nutrients during detoxification, you reduce sodium, sugar and carb intakes, which helps your body by reducing swelling, bloating and inflammation. This change can immediately be felt when you start a Detox regime.


3. Helps in Weight loss


Before you commit to a long-term diet plan, having a short term Detox regime will help break the cycle of food cravings and support you to kick start diet and lifestyle changes.  Also, as you focus on ingesting only healthy food options, your body will be ready to shed weight while it detoxes.

How to get started with Detoxification

1. Intermittent Fasting for specific days


A great way to get started with a Detox is to do Intermittent Fasting. Having a fasting plan
for 2-3 days every month will allow you to control around the clock binge-eating. Also, a
set time to eat and not-to-eat will allow your body to start detoxifying. A good way to fast is
to count your sleeping hours towards it. For example, stop eating by 6 pm and do not eat
until 8 am, or later. This will allow your body to fast for 14 hours and more. Increase this
fasting time as per your health and stamina.


You can increase your intake of water and herbal teas (no milk) during your fasting hours,
so as to let your body detox.


2. Drinking fresh fruit and vegetable juices, smoothies, water, and tea.


During your eating hours, replace heavy meals with fresh juices and smoothies. You can easily make these at home if you own a blender, hand blender, or even a juicer machine.
Just take a selection of healthy fruits and vegetables and blend/juice them to form a
smoothie/juice. My preference is for smoothies, as they have fiber and help you stay full


My favorite Smoothie for Detox is:

  • Celery 2-3 Stalks

  • Ginger ½ inch piece peeled

  • Kiwi 1 peeled

  • Banana 1

  • Pineapple Chunks ½ cup (fresh)

  • Spinach 2 cups

  • Water (as needed)

Put these all in your blender and blend until smooth! This Smoothie will not only keep you full, but will also clear up your skin.

Food items high in contaminants should be avoided during your Detox. Leafy Romaine, Meat and Eggs are some of the most common food items that get contaminated.


Also, identify the foods that cause you to feel bloated or have an allergic reaction, and keep away from them during your Detox. Many people find that Milk and its by-products cause them to feel bloated. Taking a break from them would be a good idea during your Detox.


Moreover, nuts and shellfish may be another source of allergy in many people. Avoid them during your Detox.

Keep Taking supplements or herbs.
